I know that the elastic band face mask style is very popular, but this one is different because it leaves an opening for a filter insert.

This DIY face mask style is on the easy side, even with pleats. The pleating technique is quite easy to create and it is done before you start stitching.

What you’ll need:

  1. A 20 cm x 40 cm piece of cotton fabric
  2. Two 17 cm elastic bands
  3. Sewing machine or needle (if hand-sewn)
  4. Thread
  5. An iron

How long it will take:

It took me about 15 minutes to make this mask, with the fabric and sewing machine threaded and ready.

Tips for Sewing this DIY Face Mask

Tip 1: If you need to make several face masks, have the fabric pieces cut already to streamline the process.

Tip 2: Since pretty is not the goal, I think it’s okay to use the same thread, for all the masks, regardless of the thread color or fabric color. Unless you’re making these to be purchased or for the public at large.

Tip #3: Have the elastics bands cut and ready before you start sewing for reduce production time.
